Indiana University professor Jiangmei Wu demonstrates how to create a face mask using origami. See the patterns below—one for adults only, one with a child-size mask—that you can use to create your own mask. (Right-click or control-click the images to save it to your desktop.)
The pattern suggests using HEPA vacuum filters to make the mask. Some brands of vacuum bags may contain fiberglass. Vacuum bags made from PTFE (aka Teflon®) or polyester felt will be more suitable for this DIY face mask project. Professor Wu has used a bag from EnviroCare Technologies. (Note: Dupont does not recommend use of its Tyvek® paper for respiratory protection application.)
This video demonstrates how the mask may be folded. Written instructions on how to fold the face mask are also available.
