IU Research Unplugged

Friday, Sept. 27, 2-4 pm, Presidents Hall in Franklin Hall

IU faculty are accomplishing amazing things every day. Don't miss this inside look at the research and creative activity, in celebration of IU's Bicentennial.

Seven IU faculty members will offer brief talks on the work they do and how these efforts are impacting Indiana and the world, from changing the face of mental illness to capturing life’s delights in poetry and prose.

Food and beverages will be provided following the talks, and guests will have the chance to chat with faculty speakers. This event is free and open to the public.

Faculty speakers

Bernice Pescosolido is Distinguished and Chancellor’s Professor of Sociology at IU Bloomington and founding director of the Indiana Consortium for Mental Health Services Research and the IU Network Science Institute. Her research focuses on four areas—stigma, health care use, suicide, and social networks—primarily looking at mental illness and substance abuse and the role that social and organizational networks play in people’s responses to problems.

Keisuke Kawata is a clinical neuroscientist and athletic trainer. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Program in Neuroscience at IU Bloomington. He has worked in various sports settings as an athletic trainer, including the NFL Detroit Lions, MLS Sporting Kansas City, ESPN Wide World of Sports, and MLB Atlanta Braves. In his laboratory at IU, his team is currently conducting a wide array of subconcussion research.

Frank M. Diaz is associate professor of music education at IU's Jacobs School of Music and an active scholar in the field of contemplative science. He is also affiliate faculty for IU’s Cognitive Science program. Diaz teaches courses on mindfulness in education and the arts and has served as an invited presenter on the topic for numerous academic, civic, and religious institutions throughout the country.

Roger Hangarter is a Distinguished Professor and Chancellor’s Professor of Biology at IU Bloomington. He received an Emmy Award for his work on the WFIU series “The Natural Heritage of Indiana”, and his photography and time-lapse movies have been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries. He developed the traveling exhibits, sLowlife and Plant Dance, and the Plants-In-Motion website to raise awareness of plants as dynamic and essential life forms.

Alisha Lola Jones is an assistant professor in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology and an adjunct in the Religious Studies and the African and African American Diaspora Studies Department at IU Bloomington. She is a graduate of University of Chicago, Yale Divinity School, Yale Institute of Sacred Music, and Oberlin Conservatory. As a performer-scholar, she consults with seminaries and arts organizations on curriculum, programming, and content development.

David Crandall is an associate professor in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at IU Bloomington, where he is a member of the Computer Science, Informatics, Cognitive Science, and Data Science programs. He is director of graduate students for the Computer Science Ph.D. and M.S. programs, co-director of the Center for Algorithms and Machine Learning, and a member of the Digital Science Center and the Center for Complex Networks and Systems.

Ross Gay is professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington, where he teaches creative writing. He is the author of the poetry collection Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude and the book of short essays The Book of Delights.
