OmniSOC Initiative

OmniSOC is the shared security operations center (SOC) for higher education and research. OmniSOC rapidly delivers only critical, actionable, high-quality alerts 24x7x365, allowing cybersecurity staff to focus on what’s important, at substantial cost savings, from a trusted leader in the higher education cybersecurity community. OmniSOC operates collaboratively across member institutions, reducing the time from first awareness of a cybersecurity threat anywhere to mitigation everywhere for our higher education institutions and research facilities members.

OmniSOC collects cybersecurity data from partners; integrates this data with other threat intelligence, conducts proactive threat hunting; and monitors, triages, and analyzes security events. Founded by Northwestern University, Purdue University, Rutgers University, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Indiana University and located at IU, OmniSOC also supports the ResearchSOC, the National Science Foundation (NSF) Security Operations Center, providing cybersecurity for the nation’s greatest research.

OmniSOC leverages IU’s two decades of experience and capabilities from the Global Research Network Operations Center (GlobalNOC), which provides cybersecurity services to government, research, and education networks across the nation.  

In addition to GlobalNOC, OmniSOC has partnered with IU’s Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Center (REN-ISAC). Established in 2003, REN-ISAC’s primary mission is to aid and promote cybersecurity protection, response, and information sharing among its 580 members within research and higher education communities. 

For cybersecurity researchers, OmniSOC can be an invaluable asset. Together with ResearchSOC,  OmniSOC can provide access to a variety of data, including vulnerability scans and network traffic data.  Unique data from educational and scientific organizations not available elsewhere is deidentified and provided to qualified researchers through a secure enclave.
