(Criminology and Criminal Justice) – Ortiz's research centers on structural issues within the criminal justice system. Her current research project is a multi-year, mixed-methods study of reentry experiences in the Kentuckiana region. Her most recent publication "The System is Not Broken, it is Intentional: the Prisoner Reentry Industry as Deliberate Structural Violence," posits that prisoner reentry serves as a mechanism of social control designed to perpetuate the oppression of communities of color.
