Description of the video:
[Music fades in][animation: IU trident slides across screen, text "A CONVERSATION WITH KALEN JACKSON" appears, cream and crimson bars animate in background, animated depiction of Kalen Jackson appears]
[Animation: Kalen appears bottom left screen, Text: Kalen Jackson appears]
Kalen Jackson voiceover: I'm Kalen Jackson and one of the owners
and vice chairs of the Indianapolis Colts.
[Animation: Indianapolis Colts logo appears]
And I am a very proud IU alum.
[Animation: IU logo replaces Colts logo]
My dad is Jim Irsay who owns the team.
[Animation: Animated depiction of Jim Irsay appears]
[Animation: animated transition, animated depiction of Young Kalen Jackson on green background appears]
I was anxious from a young age.
[animation: a arrow appears, text: mental health story appears above arrow, Young Kalen fades away, present age Kalen Jackson fades in end of arrow]
That continued as part of my mental health
story.
[Animation: animated transition, a blue tv studio background and series of 10 news headlines appear about Jim Irsay]
As I got older, you know, growing up, everyone
knew who we were.
Our family was in the news a lot and it's an
just an interesting way to grow up.
[Animation: animated transition with globe, Jim Irsay is spotlit on a blue backdrop, text substance use disorder appears]
It's not a secret that, you know, my dad had struggled
with substance use disorder as it's now medically
[Animation: Jim Irsay and text animate off screen]
[Animation: Kalen Jackson appears and text anxiety animates on screen]
called, absolutely tied into my anxiety.
[Animation: rotating football animates across screen, text Colts and Indianapolis Colts logo appears]
But I think the thing about that is when you
are more of a public figure and in a public
[Animation: flashes appear on screen, Kalen Jackson appears behind a podium]
family, I think stigma is there in a unique
way.
[Animation: rotating football animates across screen, a red backdrop, a megaphone animates on screen, text stigmatizing headline appear]
I think that people tend to hear
the headline and not the story.
[Animation: Megaphone and text animate off, Kalen Jackson animates on and becomes spotlit, a text bubble appears with text "But that's not the whole story!"]
And I think that, that kind of ties into anyone's
mental health because I think that's what
happens.
[Animation: text bubble animates off and on and text animates off, text animates, "Why won't anyone listen?"]
They hear the diagnosis and they don't hear
the person and the story.
[animation: white animated transition to a elementary school hallway, a poster with a sun and text "Welcome 3rd graders!" young Kalen Jackson, and a school bell]
I have been in therapy, since
I was in third grade.
[Animation: Text bubble animates, text appears "I feel so nervous!"]
I started having major anxiety then.
[Animation: Text bubble and text animate off, school bell rings][Sound effect: school bell ringing]
[Animation: animated blue wave transition, blue backdrop with text COLTS and Indianapolis Colts logo appear, Kalen Jackson animates on, podium animates on, text bubble animates and text "Public speaking is nerve-wracking!" appears]
I found I am definitely triggered by certain things that are specific
to me and how I handle that.
[Animation: Text bubble animates off, screen transitions]
[Animation: Kalen Jackson, a animated depiction of a therapist, two red plush chairs, a text bubble, text "Your voice is strong!" animate on screen]
But honestly, going through therapy and then
age, you learn how to process things, handle
[Animation: Screen transitions, animated gears appear, text "stressors" animates on]
stressful situations.
[Animation: Stressors animate off]
But for me, with my anxiety, it's a lifelong
journey.
[Animation: Kalen Jackson, text "anxiety" "Life Long" animate on screen]
[Animation: rotating football animates across screen, screen transitions to aerial view of intersection with traffic, Indianapolis Colts logo appears and shrinks]
You know, as the Colts organization community
[Animation: Text "community outreach" animates on screen][Sound effect: woosh text animating on screen]
is always a huge priority for us and I oversee
our families giving strategy, but we've always
[Video: Aerial view of Wabash River and scenic courtyard and bridge appear]
been very involved in the community personally.
[Animation: text animates off screen] [Sound Effects: woosh text animating off screen][Animation: White animation covers screen, reveals pink backdrop]
[Animation: Animated asian male and white female fade on screen]
So many people I know are a daughter or a
son
[text "Substance use disorder" animates on screen][Sound Effects: pop for animated text]
of someone with substance use disorder and
[Animation: text animates off]
have stories that are similar to mine.
[Animation: black male and white male fade on screen]
You know, unfortunately, there are a lot of
people going
through this, and
[Animation: text "This can affect anyone" animates on screen]
I think the more people realize that you aren't
doing it alone, there are people you can relate
to on this.
The better.
[Animation: Blue wave animates over screen]
[Animation: Blue back drop, a white male and black therapist sit on red plush chairs, text bubble and text "Vulnerability is the first step!" over therapist animate on]
What we really want people to understand is
being vulnerable is a strength.
[Animation: Text bubble and text over therapist animate off, a text bubble and text "I am ready." animate over white male.]
And that it's not something that should be judged.
[Animation: text bubble and text animate off, blue wave animates over screen]
[Animation: light blue backdrop, Indianapolis Colts logo, text Kicking the Stigma, Kalen Jackson appear on screen, Kalen animates off screen]
So we really wanted to start off with the
campaign Kicking the Stigma and leading people
to the resources and actually feeling like
it's okay to ask for help.
[Animation: Text: 12 month prevalence of common mental illnesses (all u.s. adults) 1% schizophrenia, 1% borderline personality disorder, 4% dual diagnosis, 3% bipolar disorder, 19% anxiety disorders, 8% depression, 1% Obsessive compulsive disorder, 4% post traumatic stress disorder, animates on and off screen]
[Animation: Indianapolis Colts logo, text "Kicking the stigma, 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental disorder each year, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34" animates on screen]
I think normalizing these types of conversations
enable that to be just that, that it's part
of you.
And I think trying to find the strength, in
your
[Animation: Screen animates to green backdrop]
[Animation: text "stigma playbook," an X shape, arrow pointing animates on screen]
vulnerability is so important that I find
[Animation: Text "strength in vulnerability" animates next to arrow]
strength in the fact that I have anxiety.
I am a stronger
person because of the things I went through
[Animation: rotating football covers screen, revealing blue backdrop, Kalen, podium, text "Processing Triggers, animates on screen]
with my family, with my dad, with myself.
[Animation: plush chair and text "Going to Therapy," Jim Irsay and text "Normalizing Acceptance," animate on screen]
I would not change
those things.
[Animation: Kalen Jackson, Plush Chair, Jim Irsay, and text animate off screen]
Were they difficult? Absolutely.
[Animation: Kalen Jackson fades on screen, A circle around text "Vulnerability" that points to text "Strength" animates on screen]
But when I look at my life and I look at the
things that have made me better.
[Animation: Circle, Arrow, text animate off screen, rotating football animates across screen]
[Video: real life Kalen Jackson sits in an office with Colts paraphernalia behind her speaking]
Kalen Jackson on screen: A lot of them are really difficult things.
I overcame something, I proved that I could
do it when I didn't think I could.
[Animation: IU logo, text Indiana University, endstigma.indiana.edu animate on and off screen][Music: fades]
