Funding opportunities

• Hevolution/AFAR New Investigator Awards in Aging Biology and Geroscience Research will provide up to 18 three-year awards of $375,000 each to junior investigators (MDs and/or PhDs) with at least 3 years of independent research, who conduct research projects in basic biology of aging or geroscience. Deadline: Sept. 25.
• The American Academy in Berlin invites applications for its residential fellowships for the academic year of 2024-25. Candidates must explain the relevance of a stay in Berlin to the development of their work and engage with audiences in Germany on one or more occasions. Benefits include round-trip airfare, partial board, a $5,000 monthly stipend and accommodations at the Academy’s lakeside Hans Arnhold Center. Deadline: Sept. 29.
• Brain Research Foundation - 2024 Seed Grant Program is providing start-up monies ($80K) for new research projects in the field of neuroscience that will likely lead to extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other outside funding sources. Deadline: Oct. 1. You must be logged into InfoReady to apply.
• The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation - Moore Inventor Fellows seeks to identify outstanding inventors and innovators who harness science and technology to enhance the conduct of scientific research, strengthen environmental conservation or improve the experience and outcomes of patient care. Each fellow will receive $200,000 per year for three years. Deadline: Oct. 11. You must be logged into InfoReady to apply.
• The Social Sciences Research Funding Program supports new innovative research projects that foster excellence in the social sciences and advance IU Bloomington’s national and international reputation. Projects may be initiated by individual faculty members or be collaborative, as long as the lead PI is in the social sciences. Maximum amount of award is $50,000 per project. Deadline: Oct. 16.
• The FRSP-Seed Funding program at IU Bloomington supports new innovative research projects that have not been previously submitted for external funding from federal, state, international, or private entities but are targeted for submission to a specific external agency and whose likelihood of funding on submission would increase with the acquisition of data or proof of concept. Maximum award is $40,000. Deadline: Nov. 1.
• The Russell Sage Foundation (RSF)- Core Programs and Special Initiatives provides $200K over two years to any of its core programs and special initiatives that address the effects of social movements, and the effects of racial/ethnic/gender bias and discrimination on a range of outcomes related to social and living conditions in the United States. Deadline: Nov. 7.
• The Mellon Emerging Faculty Leaders Award supports tenure-track faculty who have passed their midpoint review and whose research focuses on contemporary American history, politics, culture and society. In addition to bringing a diversity of perspectives to their fields, MEFL awardees are building support systems, networks and affinity groups for their students and peers. Awardees receive a $20,000 stipend ($12,000 to be used for summer research support and $8,000 for research assistance during the academic year). Deadline: Dec. 1.
• The American Council of Learned Societies - Digital Justice Seed Grants is designed to promote and provide resources for projects at various stages of development that diversify the digital domain, advance justice and equity in digital scholarly practice and/or contribute to public understanding of racial and social justice issues. This program especially supports projects that engage with the interests and histories of people of color and other historically marginalized communities. Funding is up to $25,000. Deadline: Dec. 15.

Selected Limited Submissions

The Carnegie Corporation of New York announced a second phase of the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program and a new focus on political polarization in the United States. For at least the next three years, the program will ask scholars to help Americans understand how and why our society has become so polarized and what we can do to strengthen the forces of cohesion in American society. Fellowships are awarded to 30 exceptional scholars, journalists and public intellectuals, for either one or two years, which will enable recipients to, among other things, travel, hire research assistants and take sabbaticals from their institutions to focus on their research. Nordstrom is dedicated to supporting causes that provide basic needs to youth and their families. The Nordstrom Cares Community Grants Program will accept applications in the areas of education literacy, early childhood development, high school readiness and graduation, health care, preventative care, supportive health services, human services, food, shelter and safety, and particularly how these areas affect youths.

The Centers for Innovation and Community Engagement in Solid Earth Geohazards program supports university-based centers to advance research on the fundamental solid Earth processes that underpin natural hazards. The Program has two tracks: Track I – Center Catalyst awards are intended to provide resources to catalyze initiatives to develop future centers. These awards would support groups to develop the science, management and broader impact concepts for a major research center. Track II – Center Operation awards are intended to support the operation of a fully developed center.
