IUPUI student researchers presented their summer research, spanning across disciplines, at the Center for Research and Learning’s Summer Research Symposium on July 28. This event allowed students to demonstrate the depth of their research and creative activity and highlight the impacts of their work.
“Our student researchers play a critical role in the research and creative activity that happens at IUPUI,” said Phaedra Corso, IU associate vice president for research and vice chancellor for research at IUPUI. “I was thrilled to see so many students present at this year’s Summer Research Symposium and cannot wait to see what comes next during their time at IUPUI.”
Eighty students participated at the event, with research topics in the disciplines of life and health science, informatics, engineering and technology, social and behavioral science, physical science and arts and humanities.
Two afternoon poster sessions allowed students to spotlight their research, answering questions and presenting their conclusions. The posters included the students’ abstracts, materials, methodology, results and discussion for further research.
“The lab I worked with this summer is very tight knit, and it was an opportunity to collaborate and hear fresh opinions and ideas,” said Ornoba Chowdhury, an incoming junior studying mechanical engineering who presented her research at the event. “I was able to learn about my own research in vaccines and nanomaterials but also engineering developments and chemistry as well.”
Each student worked with a faculty mentor who advised on their research project throughout the summer.
“This program allows students to work on a full-time basis while addressing specific challenges throughout the day,” said Jing Zhang, mentor and associate professor of mechanical engineering at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology. “It was a great experience to serve as a faculty mentor. Working with a group of dedicated student researchers, it is exciting when they show me some previously undiscovered results.”
